Healing skin from the inside out: Holistic approach to skin health with Dr. Oyinkansola Awodiya
Let's Discuss a Holistic Approach to Making Your Skin Glow
I sat down with Dr. Oyinkansola Awodiya, who specializes in treating the root of ailments within patients by introducing them to natural lifestyle habits. Many of us are familiar with the saying "You are what you eat"! By eating nutrient dense foods and developing positive lifestyle habits, we can treat various skin conditions.
Can you describe your holistic approach to healthcare? How does it differ from conventional medicine?
OA: My holistic approach to healthcare differs from the traditional model, which often focuses primarily on medications and symptom management—treating a symptom as it arises without addressing the root cause. In contrast, I aim to identify and address the underlying factors contributing to the symptoms. I take a comprehensive view of your health, considering aspects like nutrition, sleep, physical activity, stress levels, relationships, and other lifestyle factors that might be impacting your well-being. While I absolutely treat the immediate issue, my goal is to help you understand and address the deeper influences on your health for long-term improvement
What inspired you to adopt a holistic approach in your practice?
OA:What inspired me to take a more holistic approach was realizing that so many patients were stuck in a cycle of medications—often on multiple prescriptions, sometimes even dependent on them—without addressing the underlying issues in their bodies, like inflammation. When I started studying functional medicine and exploring a different side of healthcare that focuses on identifying the root causes of disease, it completely shifted my perspective. I began to see how inflammation could lead to conditions like diabetes, and instead of simply adding more medications, the real impact comes from understanding a patient’s lifestyle and needs. That shift felt far more meaningful and transformative to me.
What are some common skin conditions that can benefit from holistic treatments?
OA:Common skin conditions like acne, eczema, and skin discoloration can improve significantly with changes in lifestyle and diet. Our skin reflects what’s happening inside our body, and factors like inflammation, hormone imbalances, and gut health play a huge role. For instance, eating highly processed foods, refined sugars, or dairy can trigger inflammation and hormonal changes that exacerbate acne or eczema.
On the other hand, incorporating nutrient-dense foods like leafy greens, healthy fats, and foods rich in antioxidants can reduce inflammation, improve gut health, and promote skin repair. Hydration is also key, as it helps flush out toxins and keep the skin supple. Stress, sleep, and exercise are equally important—stress hormones like cortisol can worsen flare-ups, while good sleep and regular movement support healthy skin regeneration. Essentially, by nourishing your body and reducing stressors, you can see noticeable improvements in your skin’s health and appearance.
Your skin is glowing! As a travel doctor you are always on the move, what is your go to skin care regimen ?
OA:As a travel doctor, my go-to skin regimen is simple but effective. I prioritize drinking plenty of water and avoid soda or juice, which keeps my skin clear and hydrated. Managing stress is also a big part of my routine—I take breaks as needed, whether I’m working at a regular place or traveling, to stay balanced.
For my skincare, I use the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, which helps clear my skin and fade dark spots. In the mornings, I apply a vitamin C brightening serum, and at night, I use a glycolic acid serum to promote smooth, even skin. Sunscreen is a must for protecting my skin daily. It’s a quick and easy routine that keeps my skin healthy, even with my busy lifestyle.
Are there any preventative steps you encourage patients to take early in life to protect their skin health?
OA:Early on in life, I always emphasize the importance of nutrition for healthy skin. Eating the right foods that promote skin repair and overall skin health is key, along with staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water. I also stress the importance of wearing sunscreen daily, cleaning your face regularly, and keeping your skin hydrated with the right creams.
Managing stress is another major factor I highlight because it’s one of the biggest triggers for skin issues, often causing hormonal imbalances that can lead to breakouts or other problems. Learning to manage stress effectively can make a huge difference in maintaining healthy, glowing skin.
